Backbone Blues Band’s story began in a field more than a decade ago, when two future bandmates shared a beer and talked music at the Blues on the Farm festival. A conversation about the King Biscuit Blues Festival sparked an idea: “We should go.”
Later that year, the fledgling band made its first journey to the Mississippi Delta. The trip cemented a lasting love of the blues and a determination to make Backbone a band with its own voice: respectful of the tradition, but distinctive, energetic and built to entertain.
That spirit has taken Backbone from blues clubs and festivals across the UK to some of the most storied venues in America’s Deep South and Europe. The band has appeared twice on the main stage at Arkansas’s iconic King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, alongside several shows at Morgan Freeman’s Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Their US adventures have also taken them to Memphis, Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
Backbone’s sound is shaped by the old blues masters but never confined by them. Blues remains at its heart, threaded with soul, rock and country, and delivered through a mix of original material and carefully chosen classics. The band’s four studio recordings include Old New Borrowed Blues, a record that marked an important new chapter in the band’s direction.
Today’s line-up features Tony Seaman on guitar and vocals, Martin Spellman on guitar and vocals, Martin Jezzard on drums, Luke Highet on bass, and Steve Pearce on keyboards. Together, they combine a tight rhythm section, inventive guitars and keyboards, and a clear commitment to giving every audience an engaging, good-time live show.
Their reputation has been earned through repeat bookings and headline appearances at clubs and festivals throughout the UK, including packed-house headline shows at London’s 100 Club.
Whether on record or, best of all, live on stage, Backbone deliver blues with groove, grit and plenty of personality.
